Raila Odinga condemns attacks on Uhuru Kenyatta

Opposition leader Raila Odinga has denounced the recent political attacks on Uhuru Kenyatta, expressing his disapproval during the Jubilee Party’s National Delegates Conference (NDC), terming the attacks as “primitive and unwarranted.”

“In recent months, we have seen very uncouth, primitive and unwarranted attacks on Uhuru Kenyatta and his family, including the founding president, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta. Shame on them!” Odinga said.

“Nothing could be more uncouth than what we have witnessed, especially when it comes from men and women who call themselves leaders and expect to be respected after retirement.”

Raila emphasized the importance of treating the former president with dignity and respect.

“I must commend my brother and former president Uhuru Kenyatta for the dignity and decorum, he has borne insults for the sake of the nation’s stability and the dignity of Kenya’s Presidency. I thank Uhuru for choosing to fly high when they have hit an extremely low,” Odinga said.

“I call for respect of retired leaders, not because Uhuru is in Azimio, but because it is what I believe in and what civilised people should do and believe in.”

On his part, Kenyatta said that he would not succumb to the actions of certain leaders who he accused of disrespecting him.

Addressing the audience at the NDC held at the Ngong Racecourse in Nairobi, Kenyatta expressed his initial readiness to resign from active politics when he handed over power to President William Ruto last year.

He, however, says that his decision was influenced by the intimidation tactics employed by unidentified individuals, which prompted him to reconsider his retirement plans.

“I wanted to shelve politics, but others have decided that their work is to force and intimidate. Today, I want to tell you that, you can’t do that to Uhuru Kenyatta,” he told the delegates.

Uhuru directly accused his critics of subjecting him to mistreatment, going as far as referencing the attack on his family’s Northlands farm in Kiambu that occurred in March. He firmly stated that he continues to hold the position of Jubilee’s leader until the party members collectively decide to select a new leader to replace him.

“Despite abuses and stealing sheep and setting people’s farms on fire, the party has its owners and until they decide I should hand over, I will remain their party leader,” Kenyatta said.
