Suspected Al-Shabaab Militants Attack Security Forces At Mandera

Suspected Al-Shabaab militants launched a series of simultaneous attacks in Mandera County in the early hours of Friday morning.

The first attack took place in Iresuki, where militants ambushed police officers who were guarding a Safaricom mast. The officers were able to repel the attack, but one officer was killed and two others were injured.

The second attack took place in Elwak, where militants targeted a police station. The attack was unsuccessful, and the militants were forced to retreat.

The third attack took place in Lafey, where militants attacked a market. The attack caused some damage, but there were no reported casualties.

The Kenyan security forces are investigating the attacks, and they have vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice.

“At arounf 0130hrs National Police Reservist (NPR) Abdirahman Bashir, who was among those manning Iresuki Safaricom mast, reported via phone call that they had been overpowered by suspected Al Shabaab Militants and that the Safaricom mast was being destroyed,” a police report reads in part.

Bashir called his colleagues to warn them of an impending attack by Al-Shabaab militants. However, after he made the call, his phone went unanswered and he could not be reached again. His colleagues also could not be reached by phone, and their whereabouts are currently unknown.

“In a bid to establish the facts, KDF stationed at Elwak also confirmed that at about that same time, they were attacked at their camp by suspected Al Shabaab militants,” the report reads.

“Consequently there is loss of network between Elwak and Wargadud police stations.”

The Kenyan security forces are on high alert, and they have vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice.
